Lost The Plot
We try to keep things pretty simple around here but we get that some people like more clarity when playing a game. So here's answers to our most frequently asked questions (if you have something we haven't covered let us know and we'll add it in). We hope they solve any arguments at your house!
How does the game work?
A player reads a statement on the white card that starts with "You got lost and" with one word missing.
The word is filled in by the answer to a simple question on the yellow side of the cards.
All players (excluding the reader), pick a card and take turns to say the answer to the yellow card out loud.
The reader picks the funniest answer. That person becomes the next reader and keeps the white card. All yellow cards are returned to the bottom of the pile.
We recommend shuffling your cards each turn to keep the answers unexpected.
The winner is the person with the most cards at the end of the game.
What is the difference between white and yellow cards?
Our cards are double sided so we can fit them in our packs and suitcases (and save some trees!)
On one side you'll find the WHITE card. This has a statement starting with "You got lost and..." with one word missing. This is the side that the reader reads out.
On the other side is the YELLOW card. This has a prompt to answer an everyday question. These do not relate to the white card. That's what makes them funny. You use this answer to complete the sentence on the white card that the reader has called out.
At the end of the round the winner keeps the white card that was read to the group and all yellow cards are returned to the pile.
What happens if I win the round?
You keep the card that the reader had pulled out. In the next round you draw a new card and read out the statement on the white side of the card. You don't pick a yellow card. You don't answer the question but you do get to judge everyone's answer to pick the funniest answer.
Do I tell other players what is on my yellow card?
That's up to you. Each player has a different yellow card. Part of the fun of the game is that no one knows what question you had so your answer is even funnier without context. If you want to keep it above board you can show your questions. Got people who like to make a bit up, keep the questions secret and keep everyone guessing!
Do we all have the same yellow card?
No. Each player has a different yellow card. Part of the fun of the game is that no one knows what question you had so your answer is even funnier without context.
How many yellow cards do I have?
Just one.
You return it each round and pick a new one (unless you are the reader).
What if a player can't answer the question?
If a player can't answer a question for any reason (for example they don't have a phone or haven't plugged something in today), swap the card for another card in the pack
What if a player has already answered the question?
If you pick the same card from a subsequent draw swap the card for another card in the pack
What do we do if we have non readers?
We suggest pairing them up with a reader and having a combined answer
Why does the youngest person start?
As an oldest child I feel your pain. It's a suggested start point - feel free to substitute with the last person to do the dishes or a good fashioned game of paper, scissors, rock
How many players can play?
You need at least 3 players (1 reader, 2 playing) The more players you have, the funnier. With large groups, if you draw the same card, just swap it for another in the pack.
Who answers the question first?
In our house it would be bedlam but if you are more ordered, the person to the left of the reader goes first.
The yellow cards aren't very funny
No, they are not!
The yellow cards are designed to give you a quick answer to a completely unrelated question. The funny bit is the mismatch in answers. For example to complete the sentence "You got lost and found yourself in prison. You are there because of.... The answers around the table would be -
Grandma (the last person you talked to),
Wine (the last thing you drank),
Potato Chips (someting on the table)\
A front loader washing machine (the last thing you searched)
No one has any context as to why you answered that way which makes it funny. You can tell them after if you like.
How do I judge the best answer?
This is entirely up to the reader. Favouritism, nepotism, pity, belly laughs - you choose. You only get one turn in the power seat so choose wisely.
Why are there not more cards?
That's easy, we can only fit this many cards into our packs. We've made them double sided to get more out of each pack and if you get the same card twice, just return it to the pack. That way you should have up to 26 rounds (depending on the number of players). We make our games in NZ and we have set sizes that we work with. If this game goes well though maybe we could look at new pack sizes but for now, this is what we have.
Why do all the cards start with "You got lost and.."
We make card games that you take out in the real world and explore and get lost. So it makes sense when we made a play at home game that we'd also take this sense of getting lost and transporting you to a place you didn't expect.
What age is this game for?
We recommend this game is played by people 5 years and over. Younger children may not be able to answer all questions (like who they texted last) but can swap this card for another.
